A water softener operates through a process called ion exchange to remove the minerals responsible for water hardness—mainly calcium and magnesium ions. The system consists of a resin-filled tank that attracts these hardness minerals, replacing them with sodium ions. As water passes through the resin, it undergoes ion exchange, resulting in softened water flowing into your plumbing system. Over time, the resin beads become saturated and require regeneration. During this cycle, a brine solution, in our case saltwater, is introduced to cleanse the resin beads by exchanging sodium ions for the accumulated calcium and magnesium ions. The regenerated water softener then continues to provide your household with softened water, reducing the adverse effects of hard water on appliances, skin, and plumbing, ensuring a more efficient and comfortable home environment. Regularly adding salt to the system supports its continuous operation.
